Wholesale

Market Channel type.

A middle link in the food distribution chain.  Wholesalers assemble relatively large quantities of product and resell in smaller lots to various users such as the food service trade, small retail food stores, and jobbers.  Major functions may include assembling, grading, warehousing, order taking, cutting, wrapping, printing, and delivery.  Customer services such as merchandising aids and credit also may be provided.

Yearlings

Yearlings are cattle that are 12 months of age.  Market reporters usually do not know the exact age of the cattle and must rely on the physical appearance of the animal to determine the age or in the case of direct cattle the information provided by the contact.  The weight division between calves and yearlings for market reporting purposes is 600 pounds.  No comment is required on yearlings weighing more than 600 pounds, but all yearlings weighing less than 600 pounds must be identified as yearlings.

Canned

In reference to developing a report in MARS, "canned" means that the report is already created and ready for the user. On the other hand, a user would retrieve the data they wanted and would create a custom report.

How do firms determine if 40 pound blocks of cheddar meet the color specifications?

The color reporting specifications for 40 pound blocks of cheddar cheese is “within the color range of 6-8 on the National Cheese Institute color chart.” The individual in the plant responsible for plant production (i.e. cheese maker) should be consulted to determine if the color of the product being produced meets the reporting specification for color described in the final rule and on the weekly DPMRP web forms.
