DC_GR310 Manhattan, KS Tue April 30, 2019 Kansas Department of Agriculture Kansas Hay Market Report Ground/Grinding alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central Tonnage: 7,317/6,081 Last week: 7,658/6,046 Last year: 7,704/4,006 Hay market trade activity and demand remains very slow and prices remain steady with softer undertones. Much of the hay moving is previously contracted or spot loads. Top soil was beginning to dry out for many west and west central areas until early Monday morning, when thunderstorms rolled through. Most counties in the eastern half of the state received some precipitation. The central region received most of the rain with reports of more than 2 inches. New crop pricing is still illusive, but there does seem to be a definite split in opinions on price. Folks in the west believe alfalfa hay will start significantly less while those in the east say their price will remain the same until first cutting is in the barn. Reports of alfalfa fields in the southeast, near the border, are ready to be swathed but the threat of rain this week has delayed any action.
