Fieldwork is now very active wherever it is dry enough to harvest and plant. Recent rains have disrupted the final alfalfa cutting in areas that were on track to have one. According to the US drought Monitor, much of northern and central Kansas had a one-category improvement in areas that received 1-3 inches of rain above their normal weekly amounts. In contrast, D0 was introduced to southeastern Kansas, which experienced another dry week coupled with warmer- than-normal temperatures, prior to this past weekend's rains. The abnormally dry (D0) category decreased to 27.90 pct, moderate drought (D1) decreased to 1.49 pct and severe drought (D2) was completely eliminated. Alfalfa fourth cutting was 92 pct complete, near 96 pct last year but ahead of the 86 pct average.
