SF_LS795 Sioux Falls, SD Mon Oct 16, 2017 USDA-SD Dept Ag Market News South Dakota Weekly Auction Summary – For the Week Ending Oct 14, 2017 Receipts: 42,376 Last Week 25,070 Last Year 52,821 Results of: Ft. Pierre, Herreid, Hub City, Mitchell, Mobridge, Philip, and Sioux Falls Regional. Compared to last week: Steer calves 2.00 to 5.00 higher, heifer calves steady to 3.00 higher except under 500 lbs steady to 2.00 lower. Yearling steers not well compared, higher undertones evident, heifers 4.00 to 5.00 higher. Very good demand for both calves and yearlings. The feeder market got a boost of optimism as the CME Live Cattle contracts made a big move early in the week, with Oct pushing towards 114.00. Oct pulled back after that but the back months held their ground with Apr at 122.00. Cash fed cattle sales came in around 110.00- 112.00, steady to higher than last week. These are price levels that many in the industry weren’t expecting for Oct as a bearish cloud was looming over the market just a few short weeks ago. Packers cut the kill level back in order to maintain their margins, 10,000 head fewer than last week. Cattle feeders are struggling to reach their breakeven price without holding their cattle too long and overfeeding them. Very large calf runs in the Western half of the state as ranchers are in full swing of their fall marketing season. The availability of yearlings off grass is getting more and more limited with each passing week. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls 4.00 to 5.00 higher.
