SF_LS795 Sioux Falls, SD Tues Oct 10, 2017 USDA-SD Dept Ag Market News South Dakota Weekly Auction Summary – For the Week Ending Oct 7, 2017 Receipts: 25,070 Last Week 29,164 Last Year 17,554 Results of: Ft. Pierre, Hub City, Mitchell, Mobridge, Philip, and Sioux Falls Regional. Compared to last week: Steer and heifer calves sold unevenly steady. Yearling feeder steers steady to 3.00 highe. Yearling heifers weren’t well compared as more heifers this week were offered out of backgrounding yards while last weeks were off grass, steady to higher undertones. Demand for calves moderate to good, yearling demand very good. Big calf runs in the western auction markets as the big fall runs in the western auction markets is underway. Not as many yearlings off grass this last week, most out of yards, but it didn’t matter as cattle feeders want to get some yearlings bought. The futures market lent some support to the feeder market late week and helped to shore up the resolve of cattle feeders to hang tough on their asking prices of fed cattle. Northern trade was 110.00, or more, by late Friday as packers had to meet the asking prices if they were to get any cattle bought. Boxed beef prices were higher, which allowed the packers to keep their margins intact. The rains that have been pretty persistent in East River, SD throughout the last 6 weeks continued again this week. Some calf buyers were hesitant to buy calves as the pen conditions have gotten very muddy due to the frequent rain fall. Temps have been cool and when combined with the moisture that makes for a good recipe for a sick calf. Large auction receipts again this next week, several auction markets are hosting feeder cattle auctions twice a week during the month of October. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 lower, bulls steady to 3.00 higher.
