SF_LS795 Sioux Falls, SD Mon Oct 2, 2017 USDA-SD Dept Ag Market News South Dakota Weekly Auction Summary – For the Week Ending Sep 30, 2017 Receipts: 29,164 Last Week 9,766 Last Year 18,254 Results of: Ft. Pierre, Herreid, Hub City, Mitchell, Mobridge, Philip, and Sioux Falls Regional. Compared to last week: Steer and heifer calves too lightly tested last week to offer a full, complete comparison, lower undertones evident. Yearling feeder steers under 850 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 higher, over 850 lbs 1.00 to 4.00 lower. Yearling feeder heifers steady to 5.00 higher, instances to 10.00 higher on a long string of very attractive spayed heifers. Moderate to good demand for calves, very good demand for yearlings. The calves are just starting to show up in town in large numbers while the yearlings off grass are becoming harder to find. Buyers that want to feed these grass yearlings are finding much competition as the long strings of these cattle are dwindling. So when there is a big yearling sale, like this week, the bidding is fast and results in a market higher than many thought was possible given the current fed cattle market. There were many long strings of very high quality calves offered from Central and Western SD ranches this week, many in full load lots. There is a lot of interest from farmer feeders looking to feed their corn to cattle and they have shown up in force at the auctions. Silage harvest has ended and dry corn harvest a few weeks off, which allows them the time they need to receive a set of calves and get them coming to the bunk and started on feed. The condition of the calves this year is a little uneven, depending on the area they come from. Those places that were fortunate enough to get some rain over the last 4-6 weeks the grass is green and growing which is helping the calves to get a little bloom on them. The drier areas where the feed is shorter the calves are in a much lighter flesh condition. Cattle feeders were able to score a major victory this week by selling their fed cattle at mostly steady money. Market analyst were expecting cash sales to be lower again after last week’s bearish Cattle On Feed report but packers were short bought. Cattle feeders dug in their heels and held firm to their asking prices as they refused to sell cattle lower. Packers were able to push boxed beef higher while they also killed more cattle this week, 11,000 more than last week. This fact hardened the resolve of the cattle feeder to not give away more of their margin to the packer. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 4.00 lower, except Breaker cows 2.00 to 3.00 higher, bulls steady to 4.00 lower.
