Pierre, SD Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 10/13/2017 Receipts: 8231 Last Week: 6043 Year Ago: 10,449 Compared to last week: Steer calves 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifer calves under 500 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 lower, over 500 lbs steady to 3.00 higher. Yearling feeder heifers 1.00 to 2.00 lower. Good demand for this limited offering of high quality, very attractive, spayed heifers. Good to very good demand for calves. Best demand remains for steers as they will reach heavier finished weights, which allows a larger return per head for cattle feeders. Price spreads between steer and heifer calves remains very wide. Many buyers on the seats actively bidding on this large offering of very high quality, fully preconditioned calves. Many, many full loads but still plenty of packages and part loads to allow buyers to put together and fill out their loads. Flesh condition of calves ranged from light to moderate plus, with most in that moderate range. Green grass is allowing calves to bloom and put on a little condition. 21 percent over 600 lbs. 55 percent steers; 45 percent heifers. Wed. Oct. 18, special black hided calf sale expecting 4,500-5,000 calves. Fri. Oct 20, big special all breeds calf and yearling auction.
