JC_LS795 Jefferson City, MO Fri Oct 13, 2017 MO Dept of Ag/USDA Market News Missouri Weekly Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report – Week Ending 10/16/17 Receipts: 26,452 Week Ago: 25,153 Year Ago: 20,604 Compared to last week, steers sold mostly steady to 4.00 higher. Heifer calves sold unevenly from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher and yearling heifers steady to 2.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate with calves making up a large part of the offering. There was several strings of heavy weight yearlings but in many cases even some of the 7 weight feeders were really nothing more than heavy calves that have grown well this summer but not true weaned yearlings. Demand was good to very good for yearlings and calves that were weaned and had good health programs followed. Unweaned calves or those without health records still found moderate to good demand but did receive discounts which buyers assigned based on their perceived health risk. Flesh conditions were slightly overlooked in some cases this week if and only if health papers were present. During this time of year when it gets damp and temperatures swing keeping cattle of out the sick pens and alive is priority number one. It is nearly impossible to make any valid argument that producers who invest the time and funds on a good health program do not see positive returns on that investment this time of year. The Choice boxed beef cutout as of Thursdays close was basically unchanged for the week the Select however has gained about 2.00. Feedlot trade for the week saw decent volume on Thursday with live sales reported at 111.00—111.50 which was 1.00-2.00 higher. Dressed sales were reported at 175.00. A point well worth noting is the most recent report from the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker. In reality this is more of an index than an all-encompassing number but still a solid bench mark to provide a temperature of one aspect of the market. What was notable with last week’s data was the fact that feed yards moved in to the red breaking a 46 week stretch of profitability. Pasture and stock water conditions continue to be a concern in much of the state especially the through areas of the south were the cattle numbers are the highest. One reporter noted a 39 percent increase at one location in receipts since Aug 1 compared to the previous two years. Undoubtedly this is not 100 percent attributed totally to dry conditions but thoughts of saving grass is also sure part of what is on the minds of producers as they make marketing decisions.
