BL_LS754 Billings, MT Mon Nov 13, 2017 USDA Market News Weekly Combined Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report Market: Billings Livestock Commission, MT Market: Miles City, MT Market: Public Auction Yards - Cattle, MT Receipts: 17,028 Last Week 21,718 Last Year 17,995 Compared to last week: Feeder steers calves weighing under 400 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however lower undertones were noticed, 400-749 lbs steers sold mostly firm to 5.00 higher. Yearling steers were all too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Heifer calves weighing less than 450 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however lower undertones were noted, 400-699 lbs heifers sold mostly 3.00-6.00 higher. Yearling heifers were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to firm undertones were noticed. Demand for all calves was moderate to good this week on heavy offerings. Market activity was mostly active with many buyers bidding quickly on all offerings. Quality was mixed with average to very attractive offerings seen throughout the week. Buyers showed strong demand for load lot offerings this week while packages were a harder sell to buyers. CME positions lost considerable ground this week led by cash cattle prices which softened. CME feeder cattle positions from last Friday through this Friday saw contracts trade 2.40 lower on the November and 4.35 lower on the January and 3.275 lower on the March to settle at 158.475, 157.175, and 155.075 respectfully. Transportation was less of an issue this week which helped improve demand overall, despite lower CME contract prices seen almost daily. Demand from farmer feeders was also a big spur to calf demand this week as harvest has completely wrapped up in the Yellowstone valley. Slaughter this past week was estimated at 623,000, 19,000 lower than last week and 8,000 higher than the same week last year. Weigh up cows sold on mixed demand on heavy offerings. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 higher on boning and breaking cows, while lean cows sold steady to 2.00 lower. Packer buyers continue to search for higher quality cows with some flesh on them as they need these cows in order to sell cuts. Packers often competed with feeding cow buyers this week over these type of offerings. Feeding cows sold on good to very good demand. High quality cows sold with very good demand, while thin or average quality cows sold on light to moderate demand. Feeding cows sold unevenly steady as a result. Slaughter bulls sold fully steady. Demand for 2 year old to young age cows suitable to rebreed was light to moderate this week. These offerings sold mostly 4.00-6.00 lower. Offerings this week consisted of 73 percent feeder cattle, 7 percent slaughter cows, near half of a percent slaughter bulls, 18 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs.
