BL_LS754 Billings, MT Mon Oct 16, 2017 USDA Market News Weekly Combined Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report Market: Billings Livestock Commission, MT Market: Miles City, MT Market: Public Auction Yards - Cattle, MT Receipts: 13,917 Last Week 7,228 Last Year 8,073 Compared to last week: Feeder steers calves 350-449 lbs sold sharply higher, with most sales 10.00-15.00 higher; 450-550 lbs steers sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher, 550-699 lbs steers sold 5.00-10.00 higher. Yearling steers were all too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however unevenly steady undertones were noticed on a mixed quality offering. Heifer calves 300 -549 lbs sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher, 550-649 lbs sold mostly 5.00 higher. Demand for yearling cattle was mostly good. Market activity was mostly moderate to active. CME positions traded sideways this week. Contracts from last Friday through this Friday traded 0.10 higher on the October, 0.75 lower on the November and 0.65 higher on the January to settle at 154.10, 155.00, and 153.05 respectfully. Negotiated cash cattle traded mostly on Thursday at 111.00 in the southern plains and 111.50 in Nebraska. This weeks estimated slaughter is 622,000, 21,000 higher than the same week last year. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand on mostly heavy offerings. Slaughter cows sold unevenly steady as packer tried to purchase cows lower, however demand from feeding cow buyers pushed cows higher in places. Feeding cows sold on mostly good demand this week. Feeding cows sold mostly unevenly steady. Feeding cow buyers purchased both high quality cows suitable to feed to premium white as well as thin, older cows to feed for a short period of time in order to add some condition and value to them. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 3.00 higher. Demand for 2 year old to young age cows suitable to rebreed was very good this week. These offerings sold mostly steady to 5.00 higher. Offerings this week consisted of 74 percent feeder cattle, 6 percent slaughter cows, less than 1 percent slaughter bulls, 18 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs.
