BL_LS754 Billings, MT Mon Oct 09, 2017 USDA Market News Weekly Combined Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report Market: Billings Livestock Commission, MT Market: Miles City, MT Market: Public Auction Yards - Cattle, MT Receipts: 7,228 Last Week 5,523 Last Year 4,516 Compared to last week: Feeder steers calves 300-349 lbs sold sharply higher, with most sales 10.00-15.00 higher; 350-499 lbs steers sold mostly 3.00-6.00 higher, 500-699 lbs steers sold firm to 5.00 higher. Yearling steers were all too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Heifer calves 350-599 lbs sold mostly 3.00-5.00 higher, calves over 600 lbs sold with higher undertones in a narrow comparison. Yearling heifers 650-849 lbs were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed; yearlings over 850 lbs sold generally steady. Demand for calves was moderate to good. Demand for yearling cattle was very good for 650-850 lbs yearlings, while yearlings over 850 lbs sold with mostly moderate demand. CME positions continue to inch higher again this week. Contracts from last Friday through this Friday traded 1.725 higher on the October, 1.75 higher on the November and 2.175 higher January to settle at 153.95, 155.75, and 153.70 respectfully. Negotiated cash cattle started to establish trade Friday afternoon in Kansas and Texas at 109.00, and 110.00 in the Northern Plaines. Packers continue to run large harvest numbers with this weeks estimated slaughter at 632,000. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand and mostly moderate offerings. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady to 2.00 higher on breaking cows, and firm to 6.00 higher on lean and boning cows. Packer buyers showed light demand for most cows early in the week, however demand improved throughout the week as packers showed strong demand to find cows to fill harvest needs. Packers push to fill orders late in the week kept feeding buyers mostly out of the market, however the majority of the offering early in the week returned to feed. Feeding cows sold unevenly steady for the week as a result. Slaughter bulls sold unevenly steady. Feeding bull buyers absorbed much of the offering early in the week, however much like cows demand for bulls increased late week, helping offerings push higher. Demand for 2 year old to young age cows suitable to rebreed improved drastically over the last two week. These offerings sold mostly 10.00 higher with instances of 15.00-20.00 higher seen in places. Offerings this week consisted of 73 percent feeder cattle, 8 percent slaughter cows, 1 percent slaughter bulls, 14 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs.
