BL_LS751 Billings, MT Thu Oct 12, 2017 USDA Market News Billings Livestock Commission Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 10/12/2017 Receipts: 3,761 Last Week: 2,515 Year Ago: 2,181 Compared to last Thursday: Feeder steer calves under 400 lbs sold mostly 10.00 higher, 400-449 lbs steers sold steady to 12.00 higher, 450-549 lbs sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher, steers 550 lbs and heavier sold mostly 5.00-8.00 higher. All yearling steers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Feeder heifers weight less than 450 lbs sold steady to firm, heifers 450-599 lbs sold mostly 5.00-8.00 higher, heifer calves weighing over 600 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Yearling heifers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Demand for calves was mostly moderate to good. However, very good demand was seen for both lightweight calves weighing less than 435 lbs suitable to run on grass and heavy weight calves suitable to blend with yearlings and feed against the April board. Calf quality today was average to very attractive. Many reputation ranches had front end calves on offer and buyers were very aggressive in bidding on these offerings. Many heavy weight calves sold for over 1,100.00 per head today. Market activity was mostly active to very active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good demand for light to moderate offerings. Packer buyers continue to be aggressive in their search for cows for immediate harvest. Slaughter cows were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however steady undertones were noticed on like quality offerings. The feeder cattle offering was 59 percent steers and bulls 41 percent heifers with 32 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Today’s supply consisted of 81 percent feeder cattle, 6 percent slaughter cows, less than 1 percent slaughter bulls, 9 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs.
