BL_LS751 Billings, MT Thu Oct 5, 2017 USDA Market News Billings Livestock Commission Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 10/05/2017 Receipts: 2,515 Last Week: 3,085 Year Ago: 1,301 Compared to last Thursday: Feeder steer calves under 400 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher to sharply higher undertones were noticed; 400-699 lbs steer calves sold mostly 5.00-7.00 higher. Yearling steers were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however higher to sharply higher undertones were noticed. Heifer calves weighing less than 350 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher to sharply higher undertones were noticed; 350-549 lbs sold mostly 3.00-7.00 higher. All yearling heifers were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to higher undertones were noticed. Quality this week was mostly average to attractive on both calves and yearlings. Demand for yearlings was mostly good to very good, while demand for calves was mostly good. Many buyers were on hand for this sale. Demand for offerings improved throughout the sale as buyers started loads and remain strong throughout the sale. CME positions continue to post strong gains with triple digit movement seen in all feed contracts, October 2017-Aug 2018. Market activity this week was active. Weigh up cows sold on good to very good demand for light offerings. Packer buyers showed very good demand for all cows. Weigh up conditions were mostly below average with many full cows on offer. However, this didn’t slow packer buyers today as demand to fill orders was very good. Slaughter cows sold mostly 3.00-6.00 higher on lean and boning cows; breaking cows were scarcely traded. Feeding cows were too lightly tested to develop any market trend, as packers allowed very few cows to return to feed. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to firm undertones were noticed on a fuller offering this week. The feeder cattle offering was 53 percent steers and bulls 47 percent heifers with 42 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Today’s supply consisted of 89 percent feeder cattle, 5 percent slaughter cows, half of one percent slaughter bulls, 2 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs. Next sale will be Monday October 9th 2017.
