Below is the last covered sale, next sale will be Thursday October 5th.*** Billings, MT Thu Sep 28, 2017 USDA Market News Billings Livestock Commission Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 09/28/2017 Receipts: 3,085 Last Week: 1,604 Year Ago: 2,692 Compared to last week: All feeder cattle were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed on all classes of feeder offerings. Quality this week was mostly plain to average on all yearlings and average to attractive on calves. Demand for yearlings was mostly good, while demand for fall calves was mixed with good demand early in the day and light to moderate demand seen later in the sale. With rain seen over the last week some calves were carrying mud. Market activity was moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand for moderate to heavy offerings. Packer buyers showed lighter demand for cows early in the sale, however with feeding buyers absorbing the majority of the cows in the offering, packers were forced to step in and bid higher money to fill orders. Slaughter cows sold mostly 3.00-6.00 higher. Feeding cows sold mostly 2.00-4.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 1.00-4.00 higher with good demand seen from both feeding and packer buyers. The feeder cattle offering was 52 percent steers and bulls 48 percent heifers with 40 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Today’s supply consisted of 62 percent feeder cattle, 5 percent slaughter cows, 1.5 percent slaughter bulls, 25 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs. ***Next sale will be Monday October 2nd 2017.
