BL_LS750 Billings, MT Wed Oct 11, 2017 USDA Market News Public Auction Yards- Billings, MT Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 10/11/2017 Receipts: 1,989 Last Week: 1,067 Year Ago: 1,244 Compared to last Wednesdays sale: Feeder cattle were too lightly tested both this week and last week to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed on all feeders on offer. Feeder cattle sold on mostly moderate to good demand and very light offerings. Quality this week was mostly average, however limited packages of attractive quality calves were seen as well. All feeder cattle were offered in small packages, which forced buyers to piece together loads. Market activity was moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate demand for heavy offerings. Cow quality was mixed this sale, with long strings of high quality feeding type cows as well as long strings of older, thin and cripple cull cows. Many load lots of cows were seen this week. Yielding conditions were mixed as well. Packer buyers switched mid-sale and started putting the majority of the offering on feed. Buyers purchased two types of feeding cows this sale, short term feeding cows and high quality, feeding cows, suitable to feed to premium white. Slaughter cows sold mostly 1.00-2.00 lower on a lighter volume of cows destined for immediate harvest. Feeding cows sold steady to weak. Slaughter bulls sold unevenly steady as yielding conditions were mixed this week and feeding bull buyers pushed to own light weight bulls. 2-3 year olds suitable to rebreed sold on very good demand. Offerings sold steady to 5.00 higher on a very high quality offering. Feeder cattle receipts were 39 percent steers and bulls, 61 percent heifers; 23 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Offerings were 20 percent feeder cattle, 10 percent slaughter cows, 2 percent slaughter bulls, and 60 percent feeding cows and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs. Next sale will be Friday Oct 13th, 2017.
