BL_LS750 Billings, MT Fri Oct 6, 2017 USDA Market News Public Auction Yards- Billings, MT Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 10/06/2017 Receipts: 1,345 Last Week: NA Year Ago: 1,553 Compared to last sale: This is the first Friday sale of the Fall run; comparisons this sale are to Wednesdays sale, however from here forward they will be made Friday to Friday. Compared to Wednesdays sale steer and heifer calves were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed on all classes of feeder cattle. Quality this sale was average to attractive, with several long strings of high quality reputation calves on offer. Most calves were coming straight off the cow with at least one round of vaccinations. Quality this sale was more attractive than Wednesdays offering and buyers were more aggressive as a result. Demand for spring born calves was mostly moderate, while demand for yearlings was mostly very good. Several sets of lightweight thin fleshed yearlings were on offer this sale and these offerings were met with very good demand. Several of these sets of yearlings were home raised. Weigh up cows sold with mostly good to very good demand on very light offerings. Slaughter cows sold with firm to higher undertones in a very narrow comparison. Packer buyers were very aggressive as they attempted to fill orders. Feeding buyers were inactive. Slaughter bulls were scarce today; bulls sold with higher undertones on a much fuller offering than was seen Wednesday. Feeder cattle receipts were 35 percent steers, 65 percent heifers; 38 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Offerings were 96 percent feeder cattle, 2 percent slaughter cows, less than half of one percent slaughter bulls, near 0 percent feeding cows and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs.
