BL_LS749 Billings, MT Tue Nov 7, 2017 USDA Market News Miles City Livestock Commission Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 11/07/2017 Receipts: 4,864 Last Week: 7,085 Year Ago: 5,775 Compared to last week: Steer calves weighing less than 400 lbs sold fully steady in a narrow comparison. All steer calves sold steady to 5.00 higher. Yearling steers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Heifer calves 350-599 lbs sold unevenly steady. Yearling heifers were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noted. Demand for calves was moderate to good on light to moderate offerings. Buyers showed good demand for weaned calves and calves with two rounds of vaccinations. Quality this week was mixed with long strings of plain calves as well as long strings of attractive quality calves. Trucks are still relatively tight, however the transportation issue is slightly better than last week. Several strings of short weaned calves were seen this week. These offerings were met with light demand as buyers looked for calves weaned over 45 days before they offered any premium. Market activity this week was moderate. Weigh up cows sold on moderate demand for very heavy offerings. Slaughter cows sold on light demand as packer buyers purchased mostly lame or very thin cows to send to harvest. Slaughter cows sold generally steady on a lower quality offering going to harvest. Feeding cows sold unevenly steady, with high quality feeding cows selling 2.00-4.00 higher and thin fleshed feeding cows selling 2.00-3.00 lower. With cold and snowy conditions seen over the last week many cows continue to lighten in flesh. Buyers were still willing to put these very thin cows on feed, however they did so at lower prices as they were worried a portion of these offerings wouldn’t feed. High quality feeding cows were met with very good demand with many feeding buyers on hand actively bidding on offerings creating a very active market. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady undertones were noticed. The majority of bulls continue to go to feed. Feeding bull buyers purchased the majority of bulls on offer. Feeding bulls sold 2.00-3.00 lower, however bulls were full due to changing weather patterns seen over the past few days and also larger in size than last week. Young age cows suitable to rebreed sold on good demand again this week. These offerings sold generally steady on a lower quality offering. The feeder cattle offering was 52 percent steers and bulls, 48 percent heifers with 11 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Today’s supply consisted of 56 percent feeder cattle, 7 percent slaughter cows, near 0 percent slaughter bulls, 34 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs. Next sale will be Tuesday Nov 14th, 2017.
