BL_LS749 Billings, MT Tue Oct 17, 2017 USDA Market News Miles City Livestock Commission Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 10/17/2017 Receipts: 6,089 Last Week: 5,645 Year Ago: 6,476 Compared to last week: Steers weighing less than 350 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however lower undertones were noticed; 350- 549 lbs steers sold mostly 5.00-7.00 lower, 550-649 lbs sold mostly steady to weak. All yearling steers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Feeder heifer calves 350-549 lbs sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher. All yearling heifers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Calf quality this week was average to attractive, however quality overall was lower this week than last week. Demand for calves was mostly moderate for all calves on offer. CME positions saw triple digit losses today and while demand started out moderate to good, demand quickly deteriorated as contracts traded lower. This created wide price spreads in places. Market activity was mostly moderate. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand for heavy offerings. Slaughter cows sold mostly 2.00-4.00 lower as packers only purchased lame or low dressing cows this week, opting instead to feed the majority of the cows they purchased. Slaughter cow quality was mostly poor as most cows were lame and very thin. Feeding cows sold on very good demand as more than 10 buyers were purchasing cows to feed this week. Feeding cows sold mostly steady to firm, however quality overall was not as attractive as last week. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop any market trend as feeding bull buyers purchased the overwhelming majority of bulls on offer. Feeding bulls sold steady to 1.00 higher. Young age cows suitable to rebreed sold on good to very good demand again this week. These offerings sold mostly steady with last week’s prices. The feeder cattle offering was 55 percent steers, 45 percent heifers with 12 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Today’s supply consisted of 67 percent feeder cattle, 3 percent slaughter cows, near 0 percent slaughter bulls, 27 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs.
