BL_LS749 Billings, MT Tue Oct 10, 2017 USDA Market News Miles City Livestock Commission Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 10/10/2017 Receipts: 5,645 Last Week: 2,301 Year Ago: 2,512 Compared to last week: Steers weighing less than 350 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady undertones were noticed; 350- 449 lbs steers sold mostly 10.00-20.00 higher, 450-549 lbs sold mostly 2.00-5.00 higher, 550-649 lbs steers sold mostly 5.00-10.00 higher. All yearling steers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Feeder heifer calves 350-599 lbs sold mostly steady to 5.00 higher. All yearling heifers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Calf quality this week was average to attractive. Demand for calves was mostly moderate to good for heifers and mostly good for steers. Demand for calves, weighing less than 435 lbs was very good as many buyers were looking for offerings to send to wheat pastures. CME positions finished higher again today adding more support to all calves. Demand for calves weighing over 600 lbs was good to very good demand as buyers hope to finish these calves alongside yearlings and take advantage of the April board. Market activity was moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand for moderate to heavy offerings. Slaughter cows sold mostly 2.00 higher in a narrow comparison. The majority of cows returned to the country to feed again this week. Feeding cows sold mostly firm on all ages. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Feeding bull buyers continue to absorb the majority of bulls. Feeding bulls sold steady to firm. Young age cows suitable to rebreed sold on good to very good demand again this week. These offerings sold mostly steady with last week’s prices. The feeder cattle offering was 46 percent steers, 54 percent heifers with 5 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Today’s supply consisted of 76 percent feeder cattle, 4 percent slaughter cows, near 0 percent slaughter bulls, 12 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs. Next sale will be Tuesday Oct 17th, 2017.
