BL_LS749 Billings, MT Tue Oct 3, 2017 USDA Market News Miles City Livestock Commission Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 10/03/2017 Receipts: 2,301 Last Week: 1,794 Year Ago: 713 Compared to last week: 300-399 lbs steers sold with higher undertones in a narrow comparison, 400-550 lbs steers sold mostly 3.00-5.00 higher, yearling steers were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Heifer calves 450-550 lbs sold unevenly steady, all other heifer calves were too lightly tested to trend, yearling heifers 750-900 lbs sold with higher undertones in a very light test, 900-999 lbs heifers sold generally steady. Feeder quality was mostly average to attractive for all calves on offer, while yearling quality was mostly average. Demand for calves was moderate, with mostly good demand seen for lightweight calves suitable to send south to wheat pasture. Demand for yearlings was mostly good for middle weight yearlings, while yearlings weighing over 900 lbs sold on mostly moderate demand. Market activity was moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate demand and heavy offerings. Slaughter cows were very lightly tested as packer buyers opted to send the majority of cows to feed. Slaughter cows sold with steady to firm undertones as the limited offering of poorer quality cows sold on mostly moderate demand among packer buyers. Feeding cows sold mostly 1.00-2.00 lower as feeding buyers absorbed the majority of the offering. More thin fleshed, older cows returned to feed this week than was seen over the last few weeks. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Feeding bull buyers purchased almost every bull this week as packers showed very light demand bull offerings. Young age cows suitable to rebreed sold on good to very good demand this week. The feeder cattle offering was 34 percent steers, 66 percent heifers with 38 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Today’s supply consisted of 56 percent feeder cattle, 4 percent slaughter cows, near 0 percent slaughter bulls, 33 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs.
