January 25, 2017 (REPORT 4) FOREIGN TYPE CHEESE Lower year on year milk production in Europe as 2016 ended has led to making choices of what dairy products to manufacture with available milk. Cheese often comes out ahead of other options for reasons of profitability. Less milk is going into dairy powders to keep desired volumes flowing into cheese. In Italy, Parmigiano Reggiano production for 2016 was up 5.06% from 2015 according to CLAL. Grana Padano production for 2016 was up 1.2% from 2015. However, December 2016 production was up 17.54% from November and 3.63% above December 2015. In the United States, NASS reports that December 31, 2016 stocks of Swiss cheese in cold storage are even with one year earlier, but 99% of November 30, 2016. In the U.S., wholesale blue, gorgonzola, parmesan and Romano prices decreased $.0150. All other varieties are unchanged.
