MD_DA811 DA MD DA811 Cheese - Foreign Type MADISON, WI. July 08, 2015 (REPORT 27) FOREIGN TYPE CHEESE Prices for domestic foreign type cheese moved lower for the third consecutive week. Domestic Swiss cheese moved higher following the change in the Class/Component prices. Imported cheese prices held steady. Production for nearly all types of cheese are above year ago levels. Inventory levels for most Italian type cheeses are increasing. Demand for cheese is steady to weak following the July 4 holiday. European cheese production is slowing as manufacturers attempt to balance supplies with demand. According to NASS, US Parmesan production during May totaled 28.0 million pounds, 5.3% more than May 2014. Provolone production during May totaled 31.4 million pounds, 2.4% more than a year ago. Romano production during May totaled 4.2 million pounds, 15.5% more than a year ago. Swiss production during May totaled 27.5 million pounds, 2.9% more than a year ago.
