December 23, 2015 (Report 51) NORTHEAST BUTTER: Additional cream for churning is available with volumes expected to reach burdensome levels for some butter operations. Regional cream sales are sluggish, with some sellers finding it a challenge to clear the surplus. Transactions that occur are mostly at flat market. Manufacturers are concerned with the likelihood of uncommitted production and subsequent increases in butter stocks. Food service orders are temperate but should see a slight upswing through the yearend holiday period into the New Year. The market undertone continues to weaken. This week, bulk butter prices for domestic sales are flat market to 5 over the market of the CME Group, with various time frames and averages used. According to the DMN National Retail Report-Dairy, during the week of December 18-24, 2015, the U.S. weighted average advertised price for 1 pound butter was $3.10, down 22 cents from a year ago, and down 9 cents from the previous week. The weighted average butter price in the Northeast was $3.32, down 21 cents from last week.
