Some manufacturers are filling production schedules with non-cheddar type cheeses. The pizza demand pull for mozzarella cheese is good. Cheese production is steady and trying to keep pace with consumer demand. Branded natural cheeses continue to perform well in the marketplace. Industry contacts note American style cheese stocks are a little heavy. The DMN National Retail Report - Dairy for the week of September 25 - October 1 shows the U.S. weighted average advertised retail price for an 8 ounce pack of natural shredded cheese is $2.45, up $.07 from last week but down $.07 from a year ago. Packs averaged $2.44 in the Southwest and $2.65 in the Northwest. For 8 ounce blocks, the U.S. price is $2.39, up $.10 from last week but down $.12 from a year ago. Blocks in the Southwest averaged $2.48, and in the Northwest, $2.76. In the West, wholesale prices are down $.0350 for process, and down $.0675 for cheddar block, cuts, and Monterey jack. Prices are unchanged for Swiss cuts. This week, a cooperative export assistance program accepted requests for 2.092 million pounds cheese. In CME Group trading Wednesday, barrels closed at $1.5625, up $.1025 from last Wednesday and blocks closed at $1.6700, up $.0800.
