Most are maintaining steady production. Some manufacturers are working to get ahead of anticipated orders for holiday season cheese. Blocks remain a bit tighter than some buyers prefer, but overall, buying interest is being supplied. The DMN National Retail Report-Dairy, for November 25-December 1, 2016, noted the Northeast weighted average advertised price for 8 oz. cheese blocks was $2.17, 6 cents lower than the national average, with a regional price range of $1.50-$3.00. The Southeast 8 oz. block average price was $2.63, 40 cents above the national average, with a regional price range of $2.00-$2.99. The Northeast average advertised price for 8 oz. cheese shreds was $2.16, 1 cent below the national average price, with a regional price range of $1.67-$2.99. In the Southeast, the average price for 8 oz. shred cheese was $2.32, with a price range of $1.67-$2.50. NASS Cold Storage reports that total U.S. natural cheese stocks in refrigerated warehouses on October 31, 2016, 1.2 billion pounds, were down 2% from one month earlier but up 6% from one year earlier. The Northeast wholesale cheese prices for cheddar and Muenster increased $.0025, and the process 5# sliced cheese price increased $0.0150. The Grade A Swiss price is steady. Tuesday's CME Group daily cash prices saw barrel cheese close at $1.6550, down $0.0600 from a week ago. Block cheese closed Tuesday at $1.7800, down $0.1350 from a week ago.
