April 20, 2016 (REPORT 16) NORTHEAST WHOLESALE CHEESE: Cheese production requirements continue to drop available processing room to minimal at some Northeast cheese manufacturing plants. Plant milk intakes are at seasonal high levels. Demand is unbalanced as cheddar stocks build. Industry contacts suggest this is not causing major concern, as they are comfortable with current inventory levels. Domestic interest from retail and food service remains steady to lower, subsequent to post-holiday declines. Northeast wholesale cheese prices continue to demonstrate weakness as cheddar and muenster declined $0.0100. In addition, process cheese saw a $0.0125 decline. The Grade A Swiss price is steady. According to the DMN National Retail Report-Dairy, for April 15-21 2016, the Northeast weighted average advertised price for 8 oz. cheese blocks was $2.26, 7 cents below the national average and 9 cents lower than the previous week. The Southeast 8 oz. block cheese price was $2.42, down 40 cents from the previous week. Tuesday's CME Group daily cash prices saw barrels close at $1.4200, down $0.0150 from a week ago; blocks closed at $1.4275, up $0.0025 from a week ago.
