March 16, 2016 (REPORT 11) NORTHEAST WHOLESALE CHEESE: Milk volumes are keeping most, if not all, cheese plants operating on heavy seasonal schedules. Overall, cheese sales are fair to good and improving, as holiday needs help boost transactions. Orders from the food service industry are steady. Manufacturers note that higher than expected milk protein levels are increasing cheese yields. Wholesale cheddar and Muenster prices continued higher, $0.0350 this week, based on the previous week's average block price. In addition, the wholesale selling price for process 5# cheese saw a $0.0225 increase, based on last week's average price for barrels. According to the DMN National Retail Report-Dairy, for, March 11-17, 2016, the Northeast weighted average advertised price for 8 oz. cheese blocks was $2.27, 16 cents below the national average, but 9 cents higher than the previous week. The Southeast 8 oz. block cheese price was $3.15, up 61 cents from the previous week. Tuesday's CME Group daily cash prices saw barrels close at $1.4300, down $0.0350 from a week ago; blocks closed at $1.4875, down $0.0325 from a week ago.
