November 30, 2016 (REPORT 48) MIDWEST CHEESE: Midwest cheesemakers report the wave of extra milk offered over the holiday weekend eased back this week as many dairy manufacturers resume regular processing schedules. Manufacturers indicate that, although there is a good supply of milk available for processing, low-cost spot loads of milk are a little harder to find again. Cheese production is very active. Processors are racing to meet committed holiday shipment deadlines. Retail cheese orders are strong. Food service demand is steady, but stocks of some varieties of deli style cheese have increased somewhat. Meanwhile, inventories of barrels and cheese used for processing remain long. The DMN National Retail Report-Dairy shows that November 25-December 1 Midwest ads for 8 ounce shred cheese have a weighted average advertised price of $1.92, 25 cents below the national average. Midwest prices range from $1.25-$2.49. One year ago, the national price was $2.30. For 8 ounce blocks, the Midwest average price is $1.78, 45 cents below the national average price. Midwest ads are priced from $1.49-$2.49. Last year, the national price was $2.33. Midwestern wholesale prices are unchanged for Swiss cuts, up $.0150 for process, and up $.0025 for all other types. According to the NASS Cold Storage report, U.S. stocks of cheese (total natural) at the end of October 2016 were 1.216 billion pounds, 2% below September 2016, but up 6% from October 2015. American stocks were 5% more, other natural stocks were 8% more, and Swiss stocks were up 13% compared to last year. In the East North Central region (Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio) American cheese stocks at the end of October 2016, were 4% higher than last year, but 3% less than last month. Other cheese stocks in the East North Central region were 10% higher than October 31, 2015, but 2% below September 30, 2016. In the West North Central region (Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota) American cheese stocks at the end of October 2016, were 5% higher than last year, but 3% below last month. Other cheese stocks in the West North Central region were 6% higher than October 31, 2015, and 3% above September 30, 2016. In CME Group trading Wednesday, barrels closed at $1.6350, down $.0550 from last Wednesday and blocks closed at $1.7600, down $.1000.
