MD_DA830 DA MD DA830 Cheese - Midwest MADISON, WI. April 27, 2016 (REPORT 17) MIDWEST CHEESE: Midwest cheese vats remain full as manufacturers work hard to manage high fluid milk intakes. Storage facilities continue to fill and inventories are long. Central producers report steady to moderate increases in orders. However, some feel that prices are beginning to reflect the large supply of cheese available. As grilling season takes off, demand for American and cheddar varieties is increasing, while pizza varieties may start to experience some decrease in demand. The DMN National Retail Report-Dairy shows that April 22-28 Midwest ads for 8 ounce shred cheese have a weighted average advertised price of $2.33, 4 cents lower than the national average. Midwest prices range from $1.25-$3.29. One year ago, the national price was $2.54. For 8 ounce blocks, the Midwest average price is $2.25, 7 cents below the national average price. Midwest ads are priced from $1.25- $2.50. Last year, the national price was $2.38. This week, a cooperative export assistance program accepted requests for 2.465 million pounds of cheese. So far this year, the program has accepted requests to sell 17.108 million pounds of cheese. According to the NASS Cold Storage report, the East North Central region (Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio) American cheese stocks on March 31, 2016 were 120% of last year, but 98% of last month. East North Central region other cheese stocks were 110% of March 31, 2015 and 101% of February 29, 2016. Total U.S. natural cheese stocks on March 31, 2016 were 11% higher than a year ago and 1% above the previous month. In CME Group trading Wednesday, barrels closed at $1.3800, down $.0700 from last Wednesday and blocks closed at $1.3625, down $.0775.
