August 19, 2015 (REPORT 33) MIDWEST CHEESE: Milk volumes clearing into manufacturing are declining in the Midwest as most of public schools are reopening during the next week. Thus, some cheese manufacturers are buying additional milk loads from other regions to meet production schedules. However, most producers are receiving adequate regional milk intakes for processing cheese. Overall, Midwest cheese output is steady. Buyer interest for mozzarella and cheddar is high. The demand for cheese from food service and grocery stores remains strong. Inventories are unchanged. Midwestern wholesale prices are steady for Swiss cuts and process American but down $0.0175 for all other types. The DMN National Retail Report - Dairy shows that August 14 - 20 Midwest ads for 8 ounce shred cheese have a weighted average advertised price of $2.23, 12 cents lower than the national average. Midwest prices range from $1.49 - $2.99. One year ago, the national price was $2.61. For 8 ounce blocks, the Midwest average price is $2.10, 26 cents lower than the national average price. Midwest ads are priced from $1.50 to $2.99. Last year, the national price was $2.56. In CME Group trading Wednesday, Barrels closed at $1.6600, down $.0375 from last Wednesday and Blocks closed at $1.6900, down $.0400.
