MD_DA340 DA MD DA340 Dry Buttermilk - West MADISON, WI. May 25, 2017 (REPORT 21) DRY BUTTERMILK - WEST F.O.B. spot prices for Western dry buttermilk are steady on the range, but increased slightly on the top of the mostly series. Ice cream makers continue to pull more condensed buttermilk in preparation for the summer. Processors are still focusing their production schedules on drying more condensed skim in lieu of condensed buttermilk. As the result, dry buttermilk production is slightly lower, but sufficient to meet contracting needs. In addition, most supplies are committed; therefore, less dry buttermilk is available in the spot market. The market undertone is stable and continues to shadow nonfat dry milk. Industry contacts report that more buttermilk is being used in animal feed manufacturing as nonfat dry milk is too expensive. At the GDT Event 188 on May 16, buttermilk powder prices across all contract periods averaged $.8981 per pound, up 7.0% from the last event. F.O.B.
